Kate Wells

"From an early age I have had a passion for colour and an enduring love of the sea. Whether I'm designing a mural for a public building or a carpet for a child's room, vibrancy of colour, distinctive imagery and a good story are all important. Ultimately, I want my work to be as accessible and lasting as the sea." While woven tapestry is her specialised medium, Kate also works as an illustrator and fabric and carpet designer. The domestic and commercial carpets, produced by Dilana Rugs of Christchurch, allow Kate a greater design output, edition production and the chance to work on a larger scale than tapestry affords.

Using a rich yet subtle palette of colours, Kate's work is a fascinating journey through a variety of physical and human landscapes. The symbols and images of maps, figures, words, hieroglyphics, patterns, myths and everyday objects are all used to construct a powerful visual narrative. Kate considers that the story telling, mural qualities of the ancient art of tapestry still have a vital place in our society, even in this century of instant image.

Kate lives surrounded by trees in Auckland's Waitakere Ranges, with a husband who writes and her young son.
